“As for Vilnius complaints, I can’t comment on them, since it is not in my competence. These issues should be resolved between the two countries. Both countries should talk to each other on this topic,” Mikhail Chudakov said. “As for some technical claims to the nuclear plant, the IAEA does not have them."
“Belarus fulfills all the requirements of the IAEA and invites all inspections. It is an exemplary country. Not every country invites all IAEA inspections,” he added.
According to Mikhail Chudakov, generation 3+ reactors, which will work including at Belarusian NPP, are safe. “Now that the 3+ generation is taking into account all the post-Fukushima events, not a single vendor, not a single supplier will create an unsafe plant. This applies not only to Russia, but also to Westinghouse and others. The 3+ generation is safe in itself, but, of course, requires some infrastructure support, a high safety culture," the IAEA Deputy Director General said.
Belarusian NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW is being built under Russian project near Ostrovets (Grodno region). The general contractor is the engineering division of state corporation Rosatom (ASE). The commissioning of the first power unit is scheduled for 2020, the second - in 2021.
