The international public environmental expedition is carried out at the initiative of Belarusian NPP using the experience of similar events by Russian operating organization Rosenergoatom Concern JSC and the Association of Nuclear Power Plant Territories Association Foundation, which deals with economic and infrastructural development of the territories around the nuclear power plant, as well as environmental safety issues.
During the expedition, an independent expert assessment of the initial environmental conditions in the construction area of the NPP will be obtained. A gamma-ray spectrometric field survey will be carried out, samples of air, water, soil, bottom sediments and vegetation will be taken. Then the activity of radionuclides in the selected samples will be determined and a report on the results of work will be prepared.
The field stage of the expedition will last until August 20. The information received during the expedition on the state of environmental, radiation, and nuclear safety in the area of the construction of the NPP, as well as the conclusions and proposals of environmentalists, will be presented to the general public. In addition, the results of the international expedition will be included in the report on the post-project analysis program, which is currently being developed in accordance with the obligations of the Republic of Belarus under the Espoo Convention. This report will also be presented to the public and sent to neighboring countries.
