The 60th annual regular session of the IAEA General Conference is scheduled to take place in Vienna, Austria on 26-30 September, BelTA learned from Liliya Dulinets, Head of the International Cooperation, Personnel Training, and Information Office of the Nuclear Energy Department of the Belarusian Energy Ministry.

A Belarusian delegation led by Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk will take part in the work of the IAEA General Conference. The delegation will include representatives of the Nuclear Energy Department of the Energy Ministry, the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Emergencies Ministry, the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, the United Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny, the National Science and Practice Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Members of the delegation are expected to attend events of the IAEA General Conference and meet with foreign colleagues.

An exposition of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be arranged in the IAEA headquarters in the Vienna International Center on the sidelines of the conference. The exposition will highlight progress in building the Belarusian nuclear power plant, the current state of affairs at the construction site, personnel training for the nuclear power plant, and the operation of nuclear energy information centers in Minsk and Ostrovets.

The session of the IAEA General Conference will herald the beginning of a number of events meant to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2016-2017. A scientific forum will be arranged on the sidelines of the conference on 28-29 September to discuss the use of nuclear technologies for reaching sustainable development goals.

Belarus is a founding member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and takes an active part in the implementation of projects, which are carried out under the IAEA aegis. Since its inception the IAEA has been working to help its member states use nuclear science and technologies peacefully, safely, and reliably in addition to counteracting the spread of nuclear weapons. The IAEA’s work is constantly improved to match needs of the member states and the Atoms for Peace and Development mandate.

No incidents have happened during construction and installation work at the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The Belarusian Energy Ministry made the statement as a comment about the fact that the State Security Department of Lithuania is looking into reports about an accident that allegedly happened at the construction site last week, BelTA has learned.

The Energy Ministry website reads: “In view of this the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant would like to report that the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant proceeds on schedule. No incidents happened in the course of construction and installation work in the specified period.”

The quality of construction and installation work at the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is overseen in accordance with the approved regulations, underlined representatives of the Energy Ministry.

The installation of primary equipment at the first power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will begin by the end of 2016, BelTA learned from Vladimir Gorin, Deputy Chief Engineer for Personnel Training of the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.

Plans have been made to go ahead with the main operations to build the first power-generating unit. The operations will include the installation of the reactor vessel, steam generators, and the turbine unit in addition to electric technology equipment. The construction of the main buildings of the second power-generating unit will go on. About $445 million will be spent on building the Belarusian nuclear power plant in 2016 in line with contracts signed with the Russian side.

About 42,000 tonnes of reinforcing bars will be installed and about 235,000m3 of concrete will be poured. A boiler house will be commissioned to provide heating during the construction period, the launch period, and during emergencies. Plans have been made to commission the installations to feed power for proprietary needs of the nuclear power plant. A facility to supply technical water to the power plant will be commissioned.

Power lines to feed electricity from the nuclear power plant to the national power grid will be built in line with the schedule. The training of personnel to man the nuclear power plant will be continued together with the general contractor.

Plans have been made to commission 12 residential buildings in Ostrovets with the total area of 49,500m2 for construction workers and specialists of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano is expected to visit the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant today. He will examine the construction site and will be made familiar with the operation of the training and education center.
