The climate ministry bets on NPP

Written by Polskie Radio S.A.

The Minister of Climate considers that in 2040 nuclear energy should become the basis of the country's new energy system in Poland.

Poland is to build six nuclear power units by 2040, and nuclear power is to become one of the three pillars of a new energy system; its concept was developed and presented by the Ministry of Climate. The head of the department, Minister Michal Kurtyka, said on the air of Polish Radio that nuclear power plants should stabilize the new energy system of the state. "The Polish economy demonstrates accelerated development, I am convinced that this trend will also continue in the post-coronavirus period. This presupposes the provision of a stable energy supply to the domestic industry. This means that the priority in the process of transforming our energy sector should be security of energy supplies," said Minister of Climate Michal Kurtyka.

He added that nuclear energy should become an alternative to coal, which is currently the main fuel for the domestic energy sector, in 20 years. According to the Minister of Climate, an important direction of the state energy policy, along with a fair energy transformation, the introduction of low-emission technologies and the limitation of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere, should be electric mobility. The Climate Ministry predicts that over the next three years, the cost of maintaining an electric car in Poland will be lower than in the case of a traditional vehicle.
