Belarus experience in creating a system of technical support for nuclear regulation presented at the IAEA conference

Written by BelTA

Belarus experience in creating a system of technical support for the regulatory body in the field of nuclear and radiation safety is presented in Brussels at the international conference of the IAEA, BelTA learned from Gosatomnadzor.

The conference presented and discussed the experience of Belarus in organizing a technical support system in the context of the implementation of the first nuclear energy program in the country.

In accordance with the approaches of the IAEA, having an expert community with a wide range of competences in the field of nuclear and radiation safety and related fields is considered as an integral attribute of the regulatory infrastructure. In Belarus, the formation of such a community continues. In 2016, with the consultation support of European experts, the transition was launched from a single organization of technical support (Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research – Sosny, NAS) to a system of 16 organizations. In 2017, the Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations was created, which is authorized to coordinate scientific and technical support in this area.

"The experience, approaches and solutions used in our country in terms of the development of the infrastructure for regulating nuclear and radiation safety and its components appeal to other states - both with developed nuclear energy and novice countries, as well as international organizations, including the IAEA" - Gosatomnadzor noted.
